Project Avanzando

Advancing opportunities for workers and their families

Project Avanzando (Spanish for “Advancing”) is a collaborative adult education initiative for migrant and seasonal agricultural workers, providing GED (High School Equivalency) instruction in the Los Angeles Metropolitan Area. A full array of support services are offered, including:

Project Avanzando is specifically tailored for seasonal agricultural workers and their eligible family members, enabling them to successfully complete the program and enhance their career and life prospects.

Graduation for Project Avanzando GED students

Project Avanzando is funded by the Migrant Education Office of the US Department of Education and serves migrant and seasonal farm workers who are 17 years of age or older. To qualify, participants must have been employed at least 75 days in agricultural work within the last two years. Workers’ children (older than 17 years of age) also qualify to participate as students in Project Avanzando. The vast majority of PA participants are Spanish-speaking immigrants, and mothers with children who typically face cultural barriers at home; their striving for better education and jobs often impacts gender roles, expectations, family and community dynamics.

PA’s area of service touches the outermost corners of Los Angeles and Orange County including the Antelope Valley, San Gabriel Valley, Western San Bernardino, and Santa Ana. ARC Associates and Project Avanzando have forged partnerships with Rio Hondo College, Cerritos College, Long Beach Adult School, United Farm Workers of America, Project Amiga, Los Angeles County Office of Education, Hispanic Outreach Task Force, Our Saviour Center, Catholic Charities, the LA County Parent Academy, and other academic and community organizations to educationally serve migrant and seasonal farm workers in these areas of service.

PA has offered High School Equivalency Programs and GED preparation classes since January 2001. Classes are typically offered from September through June and students are welcome to inquire about beginning classes anytime during those months.
